Using the Color Wheel to Decorate

Using the Color Wheel to Decorate

Five years ago you could have handed me a color wheel and I would not have not known how to use it.  Today I have all my toes dipped in the color wheel pool and slowly submerging because it does take some time and energy to pay attention to it.

It's a tool that interior designers and artist refer to..  Whether you are an artist or looking for a way to bring more color harmony into your home the color wheel is what you need and is fail safe. This brings us to color theory.  Its an application of art and science on decorating ideas.  It uses the color wheel to explain how we see colors and how they match and contrast with each other as well as how color can affect mood, generate emotions, soothe or aggravate. This is why using the color wheel to create different effects is important.

Lets take the colors in this Henri Matisse reproduction painted by Mary Felty Artwork (that would be me) and may still be avaiable in my shop.  Where would it fall on the color wheel?  This color scheme would be a Tetradic Color Scheme that includes Blue Red Green and Orange.

I use the pocket color wheel and I find it to be more useful than a regular color wheel because it is a fold out "guide" with different color harmonies and values (and extras)

If you want to take a little deeper dive I encourage you to get Patti Mollica's book Basic Color Theory its short and to the point.  I have reccomended this book to many many of my friends and for $10 and change it will truly change how you art and decorate.

In closing, I have found that when I use color harmony in my work or home, it doesnt have to be a masterpiece to be a home run!

The links above will take you to my Amazon store, I get a very small commission and it helps supports the time it takes to write and share with you.

The bedroom pic credit goes to The Nordroom found on Pinterest used to create a mood board pic.
